I’ve said it before and I’ll continue to say it: Today’s Canadian Model owes a debt to Liisa Winkler.

Before her, of course, there wasLinda EvangelistaShalom Harlowand Yasmeen Ghauri; legends, every one of ‘em. Kirsten Owenestablished herself as the Great White North’s Ambassador of fashion’s Grunge movement.

But after Heroin Chic, when clients were done with divas, over the unreliable and bored with bitchiness - when the internet suddenly meant clients could find models anywhere, and didn’t have to put up with childishness and unprofessionalism - it was Liisa Winkler that embodied a new brand the fashion world suddenly needed.

The Canadian Model as we know it today started with Liisa Winkler. A ballet dancer from Belleville, Ontario, she was a big, big deal when Canadians weren’t. She may not have pioneered Canadian Model qualities (principled, humble, polite, hard working, cultured), but she did hang firm to those traits without being boring, which is what the rest of the world expected of Canadians at the time.

It was her face appearing in all the right places without all the hype surrounding the Brazilians (Gisele Bündchen, Michelle Alves, Letícia Birkheuer e outro) that led Models.com to call her the most underrated model in the business. There were no public meltdowns, no celebrity romances and no attempts at a music career; just season after season of high profile bookings, the sort of which don’t get a girl a write-up on Page Six.

It was Liisa Winkler that gave the Canadian Model a glowing reputation when the internet made it possible for everyone to know what a Canadian Model could be. It was her career that allowed everyone after her to understand a Canadian Model can be successful without forgetting where they came from. Daria WerbowyJessica StamHeather Marks and Lisa Cant continued that trend, but it was Liisa Winkler that first showed a newly interconnected world that aCanadian Model is not merely a pale version of her American cousin.

Year after year Liisa stayed true to her roots, helping out at the Canadian Model & Talent Convention, which is organized by her mother agent (Mode Elle’s Audra Anderson).

Today, living in Toronto with her husband and two children, she’s still tapped for jobs like Balenciaga’s FW/11 campaign and - as cited in the current issue ofFashion Magazine - she walked for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Altuzarra, Marchesa and Zac Posen at the SS/12 shows in New York.

As you’ll read in the interview that follows, Liisa’s also involved in campaigns of the non-fashion variety, committed to causes like the World Society for the Protection of Animal’s Choose Cage Free and Collars Not Cruelty campaigns.

I’ve watched her career right from the start, and she’s never been anything but a source of pride for the Canadian industry, which is why I say with conviction: Today’s Canadian Model owes a debt to Liisa Winkler.

PICTON BOY’S CARTOON GOES SECOND SEASON

The first season will not air until September, but Disney Playhouse Canada and The Family Channel have already ordered a second season of the upcoming preschool cartoon Stella and Sam.

The announcement was made at a preview party in Toronto attended by Picton resident Robbie F. and his family. Robbie is a first grade student at St. Gregory’s School, Picton. Robbie played a secondary character – Sam’s best friend Owen – in the first season and will reprise the role for season two.

The new animated preschool TV series is based on Canadian author Marie-Louise Gay’s bestselling Stella and Sam book series. The character Owen is Sam’s best friend. He’s an exuberant, over the top little boy in perpetual motion.

Robbie’s interest in acting began at age four when he attended the Canadian Model & Talent Convention in Toronto through Mode Elle Model & Talent Agency in Belleville. He has also auditioned for feature films, TV and radio commercials.

“Some kids like sports, Robbie loves acting,” said his mother Joanne. “I’m happy to encourage him as long as he is having fun. So far, he is. The people he works with at the Toronto studios are exceptional at working with children.”

Hockey and horses may soon give way to high fashion for Kingston’s Remy H.

The athletic 14 year old, fresh from an impressive showing at the Canadian Model & Talent Convention, signed a one year contract with a Toronto-based modelling agency last week with the hopes that it will lead to a career as an international high fashion model.

“That’s one of my goals,” said the Grade 8 student at R.G. Sinclair Public School. “I love looking at the high-fashion models. They have lots of different looks. They’re trendsetters.”

Herrington finished first overall among more than 50 girls in the division of 12 to 15 year olds at the Toronto competition last month and drew interest from 18 agencies. “Some of the agents said I was a prospect for high fashion,” said Remy, a blue eyed blonde who stands five foot nine. “Remy is tall and looks older than 14,” said her mother, Alison.

Remy won the cover competition, was first runner up in the photography competition and second runner up in the runway competition in Toronto.
